ITIN and EIN Applications: Form W-7 and SS-4
What is an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)?
An individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) is a tax processing number that the IRS issues to individuals who are required to have a US tax number and are not eligible to receive a Social Security Number (SSN). Persons include foreign nationals and non-resident aliens (NRA) that have tax filing requirements in the US. The sole purpose of an ITIN is for tax reporting. It does not authorize an individual to work in the US or provide eligibility for Social Security benefits.
Similar to the Social Security Number, the ITIN is a 9-digit number however, the ITIN will always start with the number 9.
The process to apply for an ITIN requires completion of Form W-7 and submission of identity documentation. This can be completed by the individual or with the assistance of an Acceptance Agent or a Certified Acceptance Agent such as Platinum Bookkeeping and Tax.
It is important to note that the Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) can expire if it has not been used on a federal tax return at least once in the preceding three (3) years.
What is an Employment Identification Number (EIN)?
The employer identification number (EIN) is a 9 digit number issued by the IRS for businesses operating in the United Sates. Businesses which operate in the United States will require an EIN. Some of the reasons include operating a business as a corporation or partnership, opening a US domiciled bank account, or remitting employment taxes for US employees. If your business is based in Canada, or on-line (virtual) but does business in the US, you may also require an EIN.
